I’ave come to really enjoy wheat beers. A few that stick in my mind are Kona Brewing Company’s Wailua Wheat, Gordon Biersch Hefeweizen, and Hoegaarden. I haven’t brewed a hefeweizen in a while, yet I’ve been cultivating American Ale yeast to use for my beers. What this led me to was the creation of an American Pale Wheat Ale, hoping for some of the delicious wheat characteristics to be blended with the simplicity of an American Ale.
The finished beer is quite refreshing. It is very light and has a definite American Pale Ale feel to it. It’s not as hoppy and many American Pale Ales, but that is where the wheat comes in. There is a cleaner wheat flavor than a classic hefeweizen due to the American ale yeast, yet there is a mild hint of fruity esters. The feel of the beer in your mouth is smooth and clean. It’s, overall, a very pleasant beer to drink and would make a great beer for summer time, game time, party time, camping time, or any time where you want a nice refreshing beer to sit pleasantly in your mouth.
